This place is nuts. Take about 10 other countries, mix them into a smooth paste, spread evenly in a baking tray, bake for 20 minutes and you end up with Skopje, the capital city of Macedonia.
The roads and driving are just like Turkey. The food is straight out of Lebanese restaurant. The streets are covered in big red London buses. Half the buildings look like ancient Greece and the other half are Spanish shopping malls. There are Czech Republic bridges for days, south of France weather, and weird dead patches scattered around the city, just like Berlin. I don’t know what to make of it all. But I like it. It’s new and refreshing.
Of course this is only my first 5 hours of aimless wondering around the city centre. Over the course of the week, there are Bazaars to walk, gorges to kayak, museums to see, and mountains to explore. Plenty to be getting on with.
Welcome to the Macedonia diaries.
